The Sodick K4HL is a 5-axis EDM small hole drilling machine developed specifically for the aerospace and energy industries, designed for high-speed drilling of thousands of precision cooling holes in turbine blades, vanes, and combustion chamber components made from titanium alloys and nickel-based superalloys.
The specialized SPK power supply is optimized for high-quality small-hole drilling in difficult-to-machine materials, providing clean hole entry and exit surfaces without recast layer buildup that would compromise turbine component fatigue life. Full 3-axis contouring and orbiting capability enables machining of shaped diffuser holes that improve turbine blade cooling efficiency.
The automatic tool changer enables unattended production drilling across multiple hole sizes and electrode diameters without manual intervention. Breakthrough detection functionality automatically adjusts parameters when the electrode penetrates through the workpiece, preventing exit-side damage and electrode breakage. The K4HL handles both through-hole and blind-hole drilling with consistent quality across production volumes.
